7th London Spanish Film Festival

Programa del festival
Aprovecha la oportunidad para ponerte al día sobre cine español. Voy a intentar ver ‘Tambien la lluvia’ de Icíar Bollaín, ‘Lope’ del director brasileño Andrucha Waddington y ‘Nacidas para sufrir’ de M. Albadalejo. Directores y actores presentarán algunas de las películas.

Take the opportunity to update your knowledge of Spanish cinema. I am going to try to see 'Even the Rain' by Icíar Bollaín, ‘Lope’ by Brasilian director Andrucha Waddington and ‘Born to suffer’ by M. Albadalejo. Some of the movies are presented by the directors and actors. 

La piel que habito

El abismo Almodóvar

Por fin han estrenado la película. La he visto y me ha encantado. Es una historia negra contada con mucha luz. La fotografía es excepcional. Antonio Banderas hace un papelón. Pincha el enlace a la derecha de la foto y lee la entrevista con Almodóvar donde habla de política, de sus obsesiones, y de su cine, valorado más internacionalmente que en su casa.

At last the film is on at the cinema. I have seen it and loved it. It is a dark story but it is told with a lot of light. The photography is exceptional and Antonio Banderas is superb. Click on the link on the right hand side of the photo to read an interview with Almodóvar in which he talks about politics, his obsessions and his films, which are valued more internationally than at home.

Cuando mis amigos españoles vienen a Londres les llevo a sitios especiales. A mí me encanta el Dim Sum. Los ‘dumplings’ son como ‘tapas chinas’, puedes probar muchas con sabores muy diferentes. Primero, fuimos a ‘The New World’ en Soho, toda una institución, donde tomé mi primer Dim Sum hace 20 años. Y, no me parece increíble, pero sí cierto, estaba cerrado por ‘una invasión de ratones´’. Después de asegurarles que merecía la pena, les lleve a ‘Ping Pong’, menos clásico pero más limpio.

When my Spanish friends come to London I take them to special places. I love Dim Sum. Dumplings are like Chinese tapas, you can try a lot of them, all with very different flavours. First, we went to the ‘New World’ in Soho, a veritable institution and the place where I had my first Dim Sum 20 years ago. And, incredible but true, it was closed due to ‘a mice infestation’.  After reassuring them that it was worth the effort, I took them to ‘Ping Pong’, less classic but cleaner.

La comida es cultura. Me gusta Rick Stein como chef y me gustan sus recetas. Síguele en su vuelta culinaria a la España rural en una furgoneta.  Prueba platos tradicionales, habla con la gente, muestra un poquito de cultura y los paisajes por los que conduce son preciosos.


Food is culture. I like Rick Stein as a chef and I like his recipes.  Follow him in his culinary tour of rural Spain with a camper van. He tries traditional dishes, talks to local people, shows us a bit of culture and the scenery he drives by is beautiful.

Aprender español te abre las puertas al mundo y a un montón de  culturas diferentes. Sigue la historia de España del siglo XX a través de la historia de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas que cumple 100 años. ¿Qué idiomas se estudiaban en 1911? ¿Qué lenguas se promocionaban en tiempos de Franco? En los años 50 los estudiantes de inglés superaron a los de francés al convertirse el inglés en la lengua universal de los negocios. Learning Spanish opens the world to you and to a lot of different cultures. Follow the history of XX century Spain through the history of the “Escuela Oficial de Idiomas” that has just had it's 100th anniversary. Which languages were people learning in 1911? Which languages were promoted during Franco´s time? Leer está de moda

Me han regalado un Kindkle y estoy muy contenta. Me gusta que puedo bajar hasta 3.500 libros. Me encanta que se lee casi como el papel y me fascina que tiene un diccionario incorporado.  Detesto que los libros que bajas gratis tienen faltas de ortografía.  Los he borrado todos. Me molesta la falta de índice en algunos libros. No me gustan los porcentajes, prefiero el número de página. Odio no poder prestar libros a mis amigos. En fin, que me parece muy útil sobre todo para viajar pero que prefiero ‘el book’.

I have been given a Kindle as a present and I am very happy. I like being able to download up to 3.500 books. I love that you can read it almost like a paper book and I really love that it has a built in dictionary. I hate that free books have spelling mistakes. I have deleted all of them. The lack of an index in some books annoys me. I do not like percentages, I prefer proper page numbers. I dislike not being able to lend books to my friends. Anyway, I think it is very useful, especially for travelling but I still prefer ´the book´.

El Instituto Cervantes organiza fiestas en 44 países, para celebrar el día del español, la segunda lengua nativa más hablada en el mundo después del mandarín. Va a haber juegos, demostración de como cocinar una paella, cata de quesos y jamón, una clase de flamenco y mucho más. On Saturday 18 June we celebrate E day, the day for all of us who speak Spanish. The Cervantes Institute is hosting free parties in 44 countries to celebrate Spanish, the second most spoken native language in the world after Mandarin. There will be games, a paella cooking demonstration, cheese and ham tasting, a flamenco class and much more. It's free but you need to book. You can download the programme here. El futuro del español y las nuevas tecnologías
Utilizar abreviaturas para escribir mensajes de texto no tiene porque afectar al buen uso de la lengua. Hay un lenguaje adecuado según el formato que se esté usando. Por supuesto, no podemos escribir lo mismo un informe o un ensayo que un mensaje tuit. (He visto la palabra así en la red).

Using abbreviations to write text messages should not affect the good use of language. There is an appropriate language to suit the format we are writing in. We would not use the same language to write a report or an essay than we would use for a twitter message. 

Españistán: de la burbuja inmobiliaria a la crisis

La economía española ha estado dependiendo del ladrillo durante demasiado tiempo. El dibujante Aleix Saló cuenta el principio de la burbuja inmobiliaria y su estallido final con mucho humor. Alex usa el formato de cómic para tratar temas de actualidad política, sociedad y vida cotidiana.  Su opinión es directa, satírica y muy graciosa. El lenguaje es español coloquial y hay algunos tacos.

The Spanish economy relied on the 'bricks & mortar' construction sector for too long. Comic artist Aleix Saló relates the beginning of the building bubble and it's final demise with much humour. Alex uses the comic format to depict current political affairs, society and everyday life. His voice is direct, satirical and very funny. The language is colloquial Spanish and contains some strong language.

Si estás interesado en el cine español de los años ochenta, de los años de ‘la movida’ aprovecha la oportunidad que ofrece el BFI en Southbank from 12 June to 7 July. Mis películas favoritas del programa son ‘Cría Cuervos’, de Carlos Saura, 1975. La otra es la clásica de Almodóvar ‘Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios’. La he visto miles de veces y me sigue pareciendo divertidísima.

If you are interested in Spanish Cinema of the 1980s, the years of counterculture called ‘la movida’, take advantage of the opportunity offered by the BFI at the Southbank from 12 June to 7 July. My favourites films of the programme are 'Raise Ravens', by Carlos Saura ,1975. The other one is Almodovar's classic 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown’. I have seen it many times and still find it hilarious.

En el lenguaje popular se suele decir me importa un bledo, un comino, un pepino para indicar que no me importa, pero esta vez el pepino Sí importa. Desde que la Consejera de Sanidad alemana acusó a los pepinos españoles de la crisis e-coli, los agricultores están sufriendo las consecuencias. In colloquial Spanish one can use all of the of above expressions to indicate that we don't care or give a damn, but at this time we do care about 'pepino', the cucumber. Since a German health spokeswoman blamed Spanish cucumbers for the e-coli crisis, the farmers are suffering the consequences. Read the article by El Comidista to learn about cucumber recipes.

Mira el primer tráiler de la nueva película de Pedro Almodóvar que estrenaron en el festival de Cannes. El director la describe como "un intenso drama que a veces se inclina por el 'noir' (cine negro), a veces por la ciencia ficción, y otras por el terror". Estará en los cines dentro de unos meses.

Look at the first trailer of the new Pedro Almodóvar film ‘The Skin I live In’ that had it's premiere in Cannes. The director describes the film as ‘an intense drama that sometimes leans towards a thriller, sometimes science fiction and at other times horror’. The film will be in the cinema in a few months time.

Siempre aprendo de mis estudiantes.  Esta semana he aprendido tres palabras relacionadas con deportes.  Y como las Olimpiadas ‘están  a la vuelta de la esquina’, es decir, cerca, he incluído todos los deportes participantes.

El 43% de jóvenes españoles está en el paro o tiene un trabajo precario. El día 15 de mayo empezó una protesta en Madrid en la Puerta del Sol y todavía están allí. Ve el video y escucha sus opiniones.

Moro is a special restaurant for me. I am from Andalusia and Moro´s style of cooking is a blend of Hispanic and Arabic dishes that reminds me of the cooking of my grandmother Isabel. Spinach and chickpeas, garlic soup, tuna with oloroso wine.  Now, next to Moro is Morito. I am going to have some tapas there on the 19^th of May and I will let you know…

Publicada por la Real Academia Española (RAE) la  primera ortografía consensuada para todos los países hispanohablantes. Los extranjerismos se adaptan cambiando la ortografía original y adaptándola a la pronunciación española. Por ejemplo, yudo, sexi, mánayer, cáterin y pirsin. La misma regla para los nombres propios como Chaikovski y Sadam. Que te parece?

Published by the RAE the first spelling agreed by consensus by all Spanish speaking countries. Foreign words have been adapted to Spanish pronunciation. For example, judo, sexy, manager, catering and piercing. The same rules apply to names like Tchaikovsky and Saddam. What do you think?

Nuevo límite de velocidad

Fernando Alonso, en contra del Nuevo límite de velocidad.
Es una de las 20 medidas para reducir la dependencia española del consumo exterior de gas y petrólero. La intención es reducir el consumo de petróleo en un 5%. Crees que es una buena idea? Piensas que la reducción de velocidad a 110 km por hora va a tener un efecto positivo o negativo en la economía? Crees que el transporte de mercancías y la gente irá todavía más lenta?

It is one of 20 measures to reduce the Spanish dependency on foreign gas and petrol. The intention is to reduce it by 5%. Do you think it is a good idea? Do you think it will have a positive or negative effect on the economy? Do you think it will make transport of goods and people even slower?
